Across West Virginia, many children are facing two heartbreaking realities: hunger and limited access to books. Food insecurity and illiteracy are not distant issues — they are present in our towns, our schools, and our neighborhoods.

This year, the Justice and Advocacy Team invites every congregation in the West Virginia United Methodist Church to join a conference-wide awareness campaign.

Our theme, “Rooted in Love: Breaking Bread, Opening Books,” calls us to embody Christ’s compassion in tangible ways.
Scripture reminds us:

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat…” — Matthew 25:35
“Let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action.” — 1 John 3:18

Alpha Christa joined in by making Garlands of Hearts. These hearts will serve as a powerful visual reminder that childhood hunger is heartbreaking — and that our love must move us to action. They will decorate the Chapel at Annual Conference.  We also made Bookmarks to be distributed at Conference that will carry a message of hope, encouragement, and a reminder that opening books opens doors for children.
